Cuba is lovely, people really friendly, safe everywhere, Havana good but a day is enough , Hemingways bar , national hotel etc. Stayed in Varadero this year- beautiful beaches white sand and turquoise water. Plenty to do,and cheap. Would go again, only downside was the 2 hr transfer from airport to resort. 50s cars everywhere.

What do you want to do when you get there? I went to Mexico in March this year and great beach/pool/food etc , the sea was warmer than the pools in the hotel
Hired a car and drove out to the Mayan pyramid (90 min drive) and stopped en route to see the real Mexico
Went to Cuba about 7 years ago ,7 days in a resort in a place called Guadalavaca and 3 days in Havana Havana was great , took a guided tour and in theory the rolling day was going to be spent wandering about and getting a 1950s taxi back to the hotel , a hurricane put paid to that idea tho
Unless you want to see something unique to the country (Mayan culture and American cars as taxis) you might as well save your money and go to Egypt for diving or canaries for doing nothing
A beach holiday is exactly that , the only difference is what you get for breakfast ,
As a foot note in Cuba we didn't see any beggars , just a few kids who wanted some sweets , in Mexico the resort is like a huge (and I mean huge) gated community so no beach bums hastling you trying to sell tat and crap gifts
If you go to Cuba you have to see Havana If you go to Mexico you don't really have to see anything
If you are after a beach and a bit of culture you can do a lot worse than Cambodia/Vietnam or Thailand .
Or just go high end holiday in Europe.

I don't know why people go to Mexico. It is a shit hole, and Tex's stomach illness is a frequent problem there. Never been to cuba, but I hear it's amazing. On the whole, I find cubans to be much nicer people than mexicans. I have to believe It's significantly cheaper as well but that's likely changing quickly with diplomatic relations restored with the US.
I remember seeing a documentary about Castro being a marine enthusiast and safeguarding one of the best reefs in the world off the south coast of the island. That would be my priority.

I lived in playa del carmen, mexico for 6 months - amazing place couldn't recommend it highly enough. Day trips to see tulum, mayan ruins, cenotes etc are special experiences

the mayan riveria, as it is called, is fine. mainly because, as a british squaaddie, explained to me in belize, is that the british special forces keep the eastern route closed to the drug gangs. Hence why it all goes west coast via alcupolco.

All over years ago...it was OK...could drive safely to interesting parts...
Now dangerous for rich looking Folks...unless you stick to sanitized US style pseudo resorts like Cancun...etc
Last visit over 10 years took me weeks to recover from stomach infection due to food/water or what...

You fucking savage! For 300 years Havana was the most important place outside of Spain for the whole Spanish empire. Underneath the peeling paint are some of the world's most beautiful buildings. I stayed in one of Ernest Hemingway's favourite hotels for about a score a night.
Fabulous place.

In both places, don't stay in a resort. In Mexico, go down the coast, see cozumel, tulum etc all the way down to Belize. In Cuba, go and stay in Havana, go to Trinidad, go to vinales where they grow the tobacco. I always scratch my was as to why people go so far and just sit on their arse around a pool, when there's so much to see.

Varadero this Summer... If you go to Cuba try the Iberostar as it is very good.
Day trip or over night to Havana is more than enough, I did 3 days and was bored after 2!

Not suggesting Chim is necessarily wrong, but both my Cuba trips were relaxing beach holidays.
There is a good opportunity to see the island and the communist way of life however you can easily mix that with paradise like white sand beaches.
I can't comment on Mexico as it has been years since I've been there and I was only there for 4 days

Two completely different places really close to each other.
It's probably about the last chance to see Cuba before the septics ruin it and if you want one of those 'once in a lifetime' holidays, take a camera and go to Havana- it's unbeatable.
If that sounds like hard work and not your kind of holiday and you want to sit on a beach, get pissed and relax, Plays Del Carmen in Mexico is your kind of place.
Think of Cuba as a cool adventure holiday and Mexico as relaxing holiday and you'll easily make up your own mind.
